Gaston County Highlights February Black History Month!

Here are highlights of some of the things going on in Gaston County, NC this month in awareness of Black History Month.

Gaston County Museum is highlighting local residents who made a mark on history through social media. This week, they are featuring two longtime professional basketball stars who got their start right here in Gaston County –James Worthy and Eric “Sleepy” Floyd.

The Public Library is offering virtual activities for young children, school age children and adults through their social media and GastonLibrary.org.

Finally, our Communications Department is using its Savvy Citizen podcast to highlight three members of the Black community in Gaston County who have been trailblazers in shattering ceilings and breaking new ground. The first is already published, featuring Lowell’s first Black councilman and current Mayor Pro Tem, Thomas Gillespie, and will continue with former Gaston County Police Chief James Buie and our very own Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Pearl Burris-Floyd, who was the first African-American elected to the Gaston County Board of Commissioners.
