Kings Mountain Gateway Trail Celebrates National Trails Day

Saturday June 4th, 2022 from 10am - 2pm



The Kings Mountain Gateway Trail will celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday June 4th with “Art on the Trail.” Festivities will include a Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest for children, along with local artists demonstrating and selling art inspired by nature and the trail, and a Gateway Trail Bike Ride to explore a 10-mile section of the trail. Hotdogs, snacks, and beverages will also be available onsite for purchase.


Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest for Children Sponsored by Southern Arts Society


Children, ages 10 to 16, are invited to paint concrete sidewalk squares with chalk at the Kings Mountain Trail Office as a part of the celebration of National Trails Day. There is no entry fee to compete and chalk will be provided. Children can work in pairs or on their own.


Cash Prizes totaling $100 and an art gift bag will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, as well as three merit awards. The squares will be judged by representatives of the Gateway Trail and Southern Arts Society. Prizes will be awarded by Southern Arts Society.


We look forward to seeing what our creative children will be inspired to draw!

  • Contest begins at 10 am

  • Judging at 1 pm

  • Award ceremony to follow

Squares are limited, so please register by June 1st to save your space. If spaces are still available, you can also register on the day of the event.

Calling all artists

Adults ages 16 and older are invited to paint “En Plein Air”, sketch, photograph, demonstrate and/or sell their art at the trail at Kings Mountain.


All media types are welcome. Artists are encouraged to paint, draw, or photograph scenery/people on the trail prior to the event to exhibit and sell at the event. Nature themed art preferred.


There is no entry fee, and no prizes. The public is invited to view the artwork being produced and may purchase art directly from the artists. Details and registration forms available online at http://www.southernartssociety.org/ and in person at Southern Arts Society.

Gateway Trail Bike Ride Sponsored by Carolina Thread Trail

If you are more adventurous, join Carolina Thread Trail for a guided bike tour of the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail. Riders will enjoy the Trail’s features, including boardwalks, scenic overlooks, and a butterfly garden.


A guide will lead riders along a mostly-gravel trail pointing out its highlights while talking about the process of building the trail system. This bike ride will be moderately difficult with stops along the way and be approximately 10 miles out-and-back with . Please be sure you are able to bike the entire distance listed before registering.


The bike ride takes place from 9:30 – 11:30 am.

Celebrate National Trails Day

This fun filled family friendly day is free to attend and set to take place Saturday, June 4th, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail, 807 S. Battleground Ave. Kings Mountain, NC 28086
