Nell Yates Woman in the Wing Nell Yates Woman in the Wing Gaston County Museum 131 W Main St, Dallas, NC 28034, USA 704-922-7681 Nell Yates: Woman in the Wing at Gaston County Museum of Art & History in Dallas, NC The Gaston County Museum of Art & History in Dallas, NC proudly presents a new exhibit honoring one of the area’s most remarkable figures, Nell Yates. "Nell Yates: Woman in the Wing" opens on January 17, 2025 , offering a rare glimpse into the life and legacy of a woman who served seven U.S. Presidents, including the late President Jimmy Carter. Described by President Carter as "the most professional public servant I have ever worked with," Nell Yates dedicated nearly 40 years to her role in the West Wing of the White House, working alongside some of the nation’s most influential leaders. This special exhibit showcases mementos from her extraordinary career, including a signed headshot from President Carter with the heartfelt inscription, “To Nell Yates, my friend.” Visitors will also see a 1980 Carter/Mondale campaign button, a peanut lapel pin, photographs, papers, and other personal items from her time in Washington, D.C. Born in Dallas, NC in 1924, Mrs. Yates graduated from Dallas High in 1942 before moving to Washington, where she began her career in the secretarial pool at the Federal Housing Authority. Her exceptional work ethic soon led her to the West Wing, where she remained a trusted and steady presence across multiple administrations. Following her retirement, Mrs. Yates returned to her hometown and entrusted her collection of West Wing memorabilia to the Gaston County Museum before her passing in 2018. This compelling exhibit celebrates Nell Yates’ historic contributions and offers visitors a unique perspective on a woman who quietly shaped decades of presidential history. Admission is free.
