McAdenville

McAdenville is best known as Christmas Town U.S.A.®, when the small mill town transforms each December into one of the region’s most beloved holiday destinations. Millions of lights illuminate the homes, trees and downtown streets, creating a tradition that has drawn visitors for generations. The season also includes the annual Tree Lighting, Yule Log Parade and ChristmasTown 5K.

History & Heritage

McAdenville grew from the textile industry, when Colonel R.Y. McAden harnessed the power of the South Fork Catawba River to establish his mills in the 1880s. The town became a classic mill village, with homes, churches, schools and community spaces built around the mill. Later, the Pharr family helped revitalize the community and strengthen the Christmas traditions that would become part of McAdenville’s identity.

Downtown & Mill History

Historic buildings and mill-town character remain part of McAdenville’s appeal. Dynamo 31, a revitalized 1940s textile mill, reflects the community’s connection to the river and its industrial past. The building takes its name from the hydroelectric generator that once powered McAden Mills, connecting McAdenville’s history of innovation to its present-day downtown.

Trails & Recreation

  • Trails: McAdenville’s McAdenville Greenway and Pharr Yarns Family Trail offer nearly five miles of walking, running and biking through town and along the South Fork Catawba River. Follow the trails for views of the river, historic dam and falls, with parks, natural areas and the town’s historic mill setting along the way. The trails are part of the Carolina Thread Trail network and connect McAdenville to the growing South Fork River Corridor.
     

  • Paddle the South Fork: For a different perspective, get on the water and paddle the South Fork Catawba River. Put in below the McAdenville dam and follow the river downstream toward Cramerton, enjoying the peaceful river corridor and wooded scenery along the way.
