Cherryville
Cherryville’s story began in the 1760s, when German, English and Scotch-Irish settlers made their way into the area along an ancient Native American trail that later became an important wagon route between South Carolina and Charlotte. The arrival of the railroad in the 1860s helped shape the community, followed by the growth of cotton mills and the trucking industry. Today, that history can be explored at Heritage Park, where five historic buildings—including an early city hall, jailhouse and one-room schoolhouse—offer a glimpse into Cherryville’s past.
Trucking History
Cherryville played an important role in the growth of the American trucking industry. The C. Grier Beam Truck Museum preserves the story of Carolina Freight Carriers, which began in Cherryville in the 1930s and grew into a major trucking and distribution company. Housed in the original gas station where the company began, the museum features historic trucks, equipment and memorabilia and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Downtown
Downtown Cherryville is coming alive with new energy. Historic buildings along Main Street are being revitalized and filled with locally owned boutiques, shops, restaurants and gathering places, creating a lively downtown that continues to grow. Arts & Culture
Cherryville’s history and traditions come to life through public art throughout downtown. Murals celebrate the community’s textile, railroad, baseball and trucking heritage, while another highlights the city’s distinctive New Year’s Shooting tradition. Downtown is also home to the Cherryville Little Theatre, adding live performance to the community’s growing arts and culture scene.
Events & Traditions
Cherryville is perhaps best known for New Year’s Shooting, a German tradition that has been celebrated for more than 150 years. The tradition continues to bring visitors and residents together each New Year’s Eve and Day. Other community celebrations include the Cherry Blossom Festival, summer concerts, Christmas tree lighting, A Very Cherry Whoville Christmas on Main, Scaryville and the Little Monsters March.

With seven municipal parks and additional neighborhood green spaces, Cherryville offers plenty of places to slow down and enjoy the outdoors. Parks throughout the community provide opportunities for recreation, play, walking and gathering with family and friends.
