Stanley

Stanley is one of Gaston County’s oldest communities, with roots reaching back to the 1700s. According to local history, a prospector named Stanley searched for gold along a creek that eventually took his name, giving rise to the Stanley’s Creek community. During the Civil War, the town’s railroad depot, known as Brevard’s Station, became an important departure point for soldiers and a route for sending provisions to troops in the field.

Brevard Station Museum

The Brevard Station Museum downtown brings Stanley’s history to life through exhibits covering the community’s early gold-mining days, the railroad, textile industry, farming, local businesses and military history. The museum also houses a Research and Genealogy Center, making it a destination for anyone interested in tracing the stories of the people and families who shaped the area.

Get Outdoors

Mountain Island Educational State Forest: Just outside Stanley, Mountain Island Educational State Forest offers a peaceful introduction to North Carolina’s forests and natural resources. Four easy trails, including the Talking Tree Trail with interactive audio stations, wind through the woods, with picnic areas, an open-air shelter and educational exhibits along the way. It’s an especially good stop for families, with free admission and ranger-led programs that make exploring the forest an experience as much as a hike.

Harper Park: is a community gathering place with a splash pad, playground, paved walking track and nature trail, along with baseball, volleyball and basketball facilities. It’s a simple place to enjoy some time outdoors while exploring Stanley.

Downtown

Stanley’s downtown offers a glimpse of small-town Gaston County, with local businesses and community gathering spaces centered around its historic Main Street. Look for the train mural, completed in 2011 by local artists Boyce and Joe McKinney, which helps tell the story of Stanley’s railroad heritage. Take a stroll, grab a bite and enjoy the friendly, laid-back character of a community that has been part of Gaston County’s story for generations.
