Just west of Charlotte and easily accessible from I-85, Mount Holly brings together a historic downtown, a growing network of trails, the Catawba River and easy access to some of the region’s best outdoor adventures. It’s a place where you can spend the morning on the trails, get out on the water in the afternoon and finish the day downtown.
Outdoors & Recreation
Tuckaseegee Park: Start at Tuckaseegee Park and follow the RiverHawk Greenway, part of the Carolina Thread Trail, an accessible paved trail that runs along the Catawba River. The park also offers playgrounds, sports facilities, a dog park and a pollinator garden, making it a great starting point for a family-friendly day outdoors.
River Street Park: From River Street Park, visitors can enjoy walking trails, fishing, a natural canoe and kayak launch, onto Dutchman's Creek, and a nine-hole disc golf course. The park also connects to the Carolina Thread Trail, where a pedestrian bridge leads to additional trails and opportunities to explore the river corridor.
Mountain Island Park: For a more adventurous outing, head to Mountain Island Park below the dam. Wooded trails offer opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing, while the mountain bike trails bring plenty of curves, climbs and challenges for riders. Fishing and paddling access add even more ways to experience the outdoors.
On the Water: The Catawba River is another reason to make Mount Holly part of an outdoor getaway. Launch a kayak or paddleboard, or head out by boat and experience the river from the water. Tailrace Marina provides access to Lake Wylie along with boating and paddling amenities, making it easy to spend an afternoon on the water.
History, Art & Culture
Mount Holly’s story is deeply connected to the Catawba River and the textile industry. The Mount Holly Museum, the official keeper of the city’s archives, offers exhibits and resources that bring the community’s history to life. Throughout the city, murals, sculptures and other public art add a creative layer to the historic community.
Historic textile buildings also tell the story of Mount Holly’s industrial past, including the former Mount Holly Cotton Mill, now finding new life while overlooking Dutchman’s Creek.
Mount Holly Farmers Market
In the heart of downtown, the Mount Holly Farmers Market turns Saturday morning into a community experience. Held April through October, the market features local farms and artisans, with vendors coming from within 75 miles and farmers required to grow at least 75% of what they sell. Visitors can find fresh produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, coffee, flowers, handmade goods and more, while enjoying live music, cooking demonstrations and family programs. It’s an easy addition to a morning spent exploring Mount Holly’s shops, restaurants and nearby trails.
Downtown & Dining
The best part of a Mount Holly day is how easily the outdoor experience connects to downtown. After hiking, biking or paddling, head downtown to explore local shops, public art and restaurants. Or make your way toward the river for a meal or a drink on a patio overlooking the water.
Stay Close to the Adventure
With accommodations in town, Mount Holly can also serve as a convenient home base for exploring the area. Visitors can stay close to downtown, the Catawba River and the U.S. National Whitewater Center, making it easy to build a getaway around outdoor adventure while still having plenty of places to shop, dine and unwind.
