What part of American History will you discover in The Turnings: A Cycle of American Time? On display beginning June 24, experience four-layered and emotional paintings by Emily Andress at the Gaston County Museum of Art & History. In this series, Emily Andress explores four repeating moments in American History that create a cycle through time. The four phases are Spring: The High, Summer: The Awakening, Autumn: The Unraveling, and Winter: The Crisis. This series does not seek to resolve history, but to reflect it; to hold its contradictions, its repetitions, and its consequences. As the seasons move forward, they also return. Highland Rail Trail in Gaston County, North Carolina Highland Rail Trail < Previous ALL TRAILS Next > The Highland Rail Trail is a ten foot wide, paved facility constructed along the historic Carolina and Northwestern Railway. This 2.1-mile urban trail passes through residential neighborhoods and industrial areas, linking downtown Gastonia with Sims Legion Park and beyond. The Carolina Thread Trail sign marks one entrance to the trail at the intersection of Broad Street and Long Avenue. From this point, the trail continues northwest past Sims Legion Park toward I-85. A tunnel takes users under Bulb Avenue and north to Long Creek. The Thread Trail designation ends there, but the greenway continues west and connects to Rankin Lake Park. Visitors can access Cramerton and all it has to offer via I-85 off of 26 through Belmont or exit 23 by traveling through McAdenville. Highway 74 also runs just north of town and straight into Charlotte if you are looking for a more scenic route. Mountain Island Park Trail in Gaston County, North Carolina Mountain Island Park Trail < Previous ALL TRAILS Next > The Mountain Island Park Trail is a gravel and natural surface trail winding through beautiful hardwood forests that offers spectacular views of the Catawba River. The trailhead and gravel parking area is adjacent to the Riverbend Recycling & Transfer Center which offers access to this trail in addition to other trails managed by the City of Mount Holly. The natural surface and gravel trail is 1.5 miles long one-way. The first section of the trail from the trailhead is gravel and is hilly with some steep climbs and descents. Once you make it down to the trail section paralleling the Catawba River the surface is natural with a relatively level slope. Some short climbs and descents exist on this section as well. The Mountain Island Park Trail is a part of Mount Holly's River Hawk Greenway system. The trail is planned to connect into River Street Park. This will allow users to access this area from downtown Mount Holly or visa versa. Highland Rail Trail Downtown Sidewalk Connection in Gaston County, North Carolina Highland Rail Trail Downtown Sidewalk Connection < Previous ALL TRAILS Next > This in-town route runs primarily along Second Avenue, turning north through the central business district to reach the Highland Rail Trail on Long Avenue. By using a portion of this route to link the Avon & Catawba Creeks Greenway to the rail trail, users can travel 6.2 miles, from Robinwood Road through downtown to Bulb Avenue, or vice versa. In the near future, the 0.6-mile Highland Branch Trail will extend these connections to Rankin Lake Park. Note: As this downtown connection follows the roadway network, users should be cautious at street crossings and be conscious of motor vehicle traffic as they enjoy the route. There are various interpretive signs along the trail, which will educate you about the local wildlife, vegetation, and history. The area surrounding the trail is a dense hardwood forest with a floor covered in lush vegetation, which is especially beautiful during spring when colorful flowering trees and bushes are in full bloom.
