Avon-Catawba Creeks Greenway in Gaston County, North Carolina Avon-Catawba Creeks Greenway < Previous ALL TRAILS Next > This greenway is paved for its entire length of 4.5 miles, and much of it is lined by mature trees on both sides of the trail. The trail winds alongside Avon Creek and Catawba Creek with a few small bridges crossings along the way. Benches are placed throughout the greenway and usually provide good of the creek as well. There are also numerous informational plaques placed along the trail regarding common bird species that can be found in the area. You can easily walk to the Schiele Museum of Natural History from this greenway along sidewalk for 0.5 miles where they showcase a variety of exhibits, a planetarium and a natural surface trail highlighting this area's history from the Native Americans to early European settlers. The land for this trail was donated by Burlington. Walkers, runners, and bikers will enjoy exercising along a variety of surface types, including pavement, boardwalk, and community sidewalk. The trail ends at the Southern Railroad overpass where hikers can make the loop around a clearing and walk back to the trailhead. Highway 74 also runs just north of town and straight into Charlotte if you are looking for a more scenic route. Pharr Yarns Family Trail in Gaston County, North Carolina Pharr Yarns Family Trail < Previous ALL TRAILS Next > The Pharr Yarns Family Trail, formerly known as the South Fork Trail, is a 2.4 mile mixed surface trail which includes natural, gravel, and paved surfaces. The trail follows the bank of the South Fork of the Catawba River and connects the quaint towns of McAdenville and Lowell. This is an out-and-back trail, totaling 4.8 miles round trip if you start from the McAdenville Greenway Park parking area. There are two parking areas for the trail. The McAdenville Greenway Park parking area or at the Catawba Riverkeeper Boathouse. If you park at the Catawba Riverkeeper Boathouse and head north towards Lowell then the trail is 2 miles long one way. The crushed gravel and concrete surface portion (.4 miles one way) of the trail starts on a sidewalk from the McAdenville Greenway Park then leads you to the Catawba Riverkeeper Boathouse. From the Boathouse the trail is natural surface and travels underneath the I-85 bridge and quickly meanders through a quiet section of woods along the river. The trail ends at the cul-de-sac of the Riverview residential neighborhood in Lowell, NC. While no parking is available at this end of the trail, there is pedestrian access for neighborhood residents.
