The arrival of the railroad in the 1860s helped shape the community, followed by the growth of cotton mills and the trucking industry. Today, that history can be explored at Heritage Park, where five historic buildings—including an early city hall, jailhouse and one-room schoolhouse—offer a glimpse into Cherryville’s past. Trucking History Cherryville played an important role in the growth of the American trucking industry. The C. Grier Beam Truck Museum preserves the story of Carolina Freight Carriers, which began in Cherryville in the 1930s and grew into a major trucking and distribution company. Housed in the original gas station where the company began, the museum features historic trucks, equipment and memorabilia and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown Downtown Cherryville is coming alive with new energy. Historic buildings along Main Street are being revitalized and filled with locally owned boutiques, shops, restaurants and gathering places, creating a lively downtown that continues to grow. The railroad arrived soon after, connecting Lowell to a growing network of towns and markets. Incorporated in 1879, Lowell was named after Lowell, Massachusetts, with hopes of becoming a thriving textile center of its own. Today, the city’s history remains an important part of its character and its connection to Gaston County’s mill-town heritage. Outdoors George Poston Park: is one of Gaston County’s premier outdoor recreation destinations, with 12 miles of multi-use trails winding through the landscape around Spencer Mountain and the South Fork Catawba River. Visitors can hike, bike, fish, explore the pump track, enjoy the dog park and playground, or spend time at the park’s sports fields and picnic areas. Spencer Mountain: Rising above the South Fork Catawba River, Spencer Mountain provides a dramatic backdrop to George Poston Park. A planned trail connection will link George Poston Park to the Spencer Mountain Overlook, creating a new connection within the Carolina Thread Trail network.
