This July and August, Gaston County becomes the home for American Legion baseball, and the timing couldn't be better for anyone looking for a reason to spend a summer weekend with us.

In back-to-back months, our ballparks will host two of the highest levels of Legion competition: the North Carolina American Legion State Tournament at Sims Legion Park (July 25-29) and the American Legion Super Regional Tournament at Fraley Field and Sims Legion Park (August 5-9). The American Legion World Series follows shortly after in nearby Shelby, giving fans across our region a rare stretch of top-tier Legion baseball to follow from mid-July to mid-August.

A Two-Year Hosting Run Begins

Gastonia's Sims Legion Park is stepping into the spotlight as the new home of the NC state tournament, with Gaston Braves Post 144-266 serving as the host. This kicks off a two-year run that begins with this July's tournament. The tournament comes to Gastonia after a run of recent years in Cherryville, which hosted the state tournament in 2019, 2021, 2024, and 2025. So, while the venue is changing, the championship is staying right here in Gaston County. It's a big get for a ballpark with deep roots in local baseball history, and it means the state's best American Legion teams will be playing for a championship right here in Gastonia.

Just a couple weeks later, the action shifts to the Regional level. Cherryville was selected to host both Region 3 and Region 4 of the American Legion regional tournaments for 2026 and 2027, and because two regionals are running at the same time, games will be split between Fraley Field in Cherryville and Sims Legion Park in Gastonia. That means eight teams from across the Southeast and eight teams from the Mid-South will be in Gaston County fighting for a spot in the American Legion World Series.

Put it together, and Gaston County is hosting a state championship and a national-level regional in the same summer, a rare double that puts our ballparks, our hospitality, and our county on the radar for teams, families, and fans from well outside our borders.
