If you’re looking for a peaceful, nature-rich escape close to Charlotte and Gaston County, Mountain Island Educational State Forest (ESF) is officially open and ready to welcome visitors. This picturesque forest stretches across Gaston and Lincoln counties and offers an experience unlike anywhere else in the region—blending scenic trails with hands-on learning about North Carolina’s forests, wildlife, and water resources.

Whether you love hiking, exploring nature with your family, or discovering new parks and outdoor spaces, Mountain Island ESF is a destination worth adding to your must-visit list.

A Forest With Purpose: Protecting North Carolina’s Water and Wildlife

Mountain Island Educational State Forest sits on an important conservation easement surrounding Mountain Island Lake—a lake that supplies drinking water for one out of every 12 North Carolinians. Because of its location, the forest is carefully managed using best practices that protect water quality and support a healthy ecosystem.

It’s not just a place to walk in nature—it’s a chance to see real forestry work in action. Visitors may even witness prescribed burns, forest restoration, or other environmental practices during their visit.

Trails for All Levels

Mountain Island ESF features four easy-to-enjoy walking trails, each offering its own style of scenery and learning opportunities. All trails are for foot traffic only, keeping the experience peaceful and family-friendly.

Trails Include:

  • Talking Tree Trail – Enjoy short audio stories told from the perspective of the “trees” themselves.

  • Harvest Hill Trail – Walk through a previously harvested pine area and see how forests regenerate naturally.

  • Demonstration Trail – Learn about forest firefighting equipment and access the nearby picnic shelter.

  • Loblolly Loop Trail – Explore prescribed burn areas and a transitional forest landscape.

Trail distances range from just ¼ mile to a little over a mile, making them perfect for kids, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a relaxing outdoor experience.
