Nutcrackers, as we know them today, originated in Germany in the 17th century. Originally functional tools for cracking nuts, they evolved into decorative art, especially during the Christmas season. The iconic wooden soldier nutcracker emerged in the 19th century, and after World War II, American soldiers brought nutcrackers home as souvenirs, inspiring generations of collectors.
The History of Nutcrackers
Nutcrackers, as we know them today, originated in Germany in the 17th century. Originally practical tools for cracking nuts, they evolved into decorative art, especially during the Christmas season. The iconic wooden soldier nutcracker appeared in Germany in the 19th century.
After World War II, American soldiers brought nutcrackers home from Germany, popularizing them in the U.S. This inspired collectors like Margaret Cook, whose passion for nutcrackers became the foundation of the museum.
Margaret Cook: The Collector Behind the Museum
The genesis of Nutty For Nutcrackers, Inc. grew from the dream of one remarkable mother. Margaret Cook celebrated every holiday with gusto, and her patriotic spirit inspired a massive nutcracker display honoring veterans and first responders. She loved life, had a wonderful sense of humor, and remained young at heart until her heavenly homecoming at the age of 95.
Mrs. Cook married a World War II combat veteran in 1948. She noticed that some returning GIs brought German nutcrackers from Europe, and she was captivated by their expressive faces, vibrant colors, and endless variety.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Margaret raised three children while working a variety of jobs. She also lived in West Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida, where she is buried alongside her husband, Gregg, in Bradenton. Her oldest son, Mark, now of Shelby, North Carolina, oversees the restoration and acquisition of the nutcrackers.
The building and display setup—bringing this whimsical vision to life—is the outstanding work of MaDonna and Nathan Martin of Kings Mountain, North Carolina.
