In 2026, the United States will mark an extraordinary milestone: 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Known nationally as America 250, this Semiquincentennial is an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s past, honor the voices that shaped our democracy, and celebrate the present with family, friends, and community.
There’s no better place to join the celebration than Gaston County, North Carolina, where history, community, and creativity come together. Working in partnership with the America 250 North Carolina initiative, administered by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Gaston County is bringing this milestone to life through engaging exhibits, films, and interactive experiences that invite visitors to explore the county’s rich heritage.

Make History Come Alive: Making Our Voices Heard Exhibit
Opening January 9 at the Gaston County Museum of Art & History, the traveling exhibit Making Our Voices Heard explores how everyday North Carolinians shaped democracy through courage, action, and persistence.
Through stories of freedom, civic responsibility, and perseverance, the exhibit encourages visitors to reflect on the voices that shaped our country—and their own role in shaping the future, the exhibit highlights seven influential figures, including:

Explore America’s Story Through Film
The Gaston County Public Library is hosting an eight-part Historical Fiction Film Series, offering visitors a cinematic journey through key moments in American history. This series is another great way to enjoy educational entertainment while visiting the county. One of these films pairs perfectly with a museum stop or a stroll through nearby historic sites—making it an ideal activity for visitors planning a full-day or weekend itinerary.

May 4 – The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman: One woman’s life spanning slavery to civil rights
May 11 – United 93: Heroism and sacrifice during September 11

Gaston 250 Passport: Adventure Across the County
For an interactive experience, visitors can grab a Gaston 250 Passport at the Gaston County Museum of Art & History or the Gaston County Public Library Main Branch.
Collect stamps at eight or more of the thirteen historic locations
Return your passport by July 3, 2026 for recognition
Receive collectible trading cards highlighting Gaston County’s history
This hands-on program allows visitors to explore historic mills, schools, churches, and landmarks while discovering the rich stories of Gaston County’s role in North Carolina and the nation.
