Off the Bitten Path is a GoGastonNC series exploring Gaston County’s hidden culinary gems, local dining spots steeped in history, tradition, and cherished family recipes. Known and loved by residents, these local favorites offer visitors a taste of the people, flavors, and stories that make Gaston County special.

This time, we’re heading to McDonald’s Family Restaurant in Bessemer City, where a quarter-pound cheeseburger, BBQ slaw, and sweet tea are part of a hometown tradition dating back to 1965.

A Cheeseburger Worth the Stop

Some food discoveries don't need a complicated menu. At McDonald’s Family Restaurant, the star is the quarter-pound cheeseburger, a longtime local favorite that has kept customers coming back for generations.

For a taste of Southern tradition, add the BBQ slaw. Its tangy flavor brings a distinctive Carolina touch to the meal. Pair it with a glass of sweet tea, and you have the makings of a classic Southern lunch

It's simple, familiar food, served at a place with a story of its own.

More Than a Meal

McDonald’s Family Restaurant began as a carry-out business in 1965 and expanded to include a dining room in 1981. Over the decades, it has become part of the fabric of Bessemer City, built on consistency, word of mouth, and relationships with generations of customers.

That hometown connection reflects Bessemer City's tagline, Heartfelt Living. Here, a meal is an opportunity to experience the character of a community, not just check another restaurant off a list.
